Engineers in AFNWC solve highly complex problems to promote national security through nuclear deterrence. They solve the most complex, high-risk aspects of the Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) program - the ground-based leg of America's Nuclear Triad. The AFNWC Sentinel Systems Directorate manages the design, development, and integrated life-cycle activities of the new Sentinel ICBM weapon system - which will replace the aging Minuteman III ICBM. The primary purpose of this new Lead Engineer position is to serve as the technical subject matter expert on systems engineering architecture for the Sentinel Weapon System Effectiveness Branch within the System Engineering and Integration (SE&I) Division. Our branch ensures Sentinel weapon system requirements meet war fighter mission capability needs by using model-based systems engineering to verify and validate requirements and interfaces through system architecture models, analysis, simulations, and test. The new lead will oversee Sentinel's architecture development, using model-based system engineering within the Sentinel's digital engineering environment. DUTIES: Leads a diverse team of government employees, government support contractors, and other stakeholders in developing, integrating, and implementing technical solutions to diverse, highly complex problems. Promotes teamwork, and solves broad organizational issues to ensure a flexible, low-risk approach and on-time delivery of the Sentinel Weapon System. Provides program leadership and technical guidance on architecture governance and development activities, to include management and oversight of model content and profile development. Serves as subject matter expert over Sentinel's model-based system engineering within Sentinel's weapon system engineering functional, allocated, and product baseline. Engages in engineering, concept planning, design and development, integration, evaluation, and auditing of architecture content; identifies and resolves highly complex technical problems related to model-based systems engineering. Monitors schedule, cost, performance, and acquisition requirements for programs within the Weapon Systems Effectiveness Branch and assists in resolving issues encountered throughout the acquisition process. Engages with extended and geographically dispersed stakeholders, including subject matter experts from across the Sentinel Systems Directorate, Air Force Global Strike Command, support contractors, and senior Department of Defense officials; ensuring Sentinel technical activities are successfully planned, coordinated, and executed. Leads technical reviews of contractor deliverables to: Ensure adherence to appropriate requirements, governance, and guidance; Assess progress toward system architecture goals and objectives; Identify risk areas; and Provide feedback to resolve challenges associated with architecting complex systems, to include potential design changes during Engineering and Manufacturing Development and Production phases of the Sentinel life cycle. SKILLS: Positions at this level typically have 5-10 years of relevant engineering experience. Experience with systems engineering, specifically complex system architecture, including evaluating risks for a large, complex, high-dollar program is strongly preferred. Experience with system architecture design, architecture frameworks such as DoDAF, modeling languages such as Unified Modeling Language (UML) & Systems Modeling Language (SysML), and modeling tools such as Cameo is highly valued. Strong technical skills in engineering, sufficient to serve as a senior subject matter expert able to identify technical gaps and deficiencies in contractor deliverables requiring attention for the next iteration, are ideal. Experience in verifying contractor allocation of requirements to system elements, contractor development of model content (e.g. use-cases, meta-models), and contractor technical baseline management is ideal. Leadership and mentoring skills to guide and develop team members across the Sentinel Systems Directorate in pursuit of program objectives and milestones are strongly preferred. Depth of experience in integrating systems engineering efforts from multiple teams within an enterprise is highly valued. Breadth of engineering experience and relevant master's degree are preferred.
