*Job Summary: * The Certified Coder Specialist will have frequent and daily interactions with internal and external clients including but not limited to the Physician and Non-physician Surgical Providers including General Surgery, Transplant, Cardiothoracic, Orthopedics, Cardiology and Gastroenterology

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

  • The Medical Coder Specialist focuses their work on the detailed physician surgical chart abstraction as well as being an immediate liaison to documentation improvement and optimization of physician coding practices for compliance and revenue purposes. Surgical abstraction coding is defined as identification of codes based solely on the source documentation for ICD9, ICD10 and CPT respectively.

  • Working knowledge of NCCI and LCD guidelines

  • Evaluation and Management coding to the highest specificity

  • Extensive knowledge medical terminology, physiology, anatomy, ethics and HIPAA guidelines.

  • Working knowledge of CMS statutes and regulations

  • Provide education and support to the billing staff related to denials related to medical necessity and other coding edits

  • Assist with internal and external audits that are a part of our compliance review

Review results with physicians and provide guidance regarding documentation requirements

  • Complete Performa when new drugs and/or procedures are introduced by the providers

Minimum Certifications, Registry and/or Licenses Required: CPC and AAPC Certification

Minimum Degree Required and Experience Required:

High school diploma or GED required. Minimum two years experience in medical billing setting.

Minimum three years coding experience

Skill Requirements:

Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other employees, patients, hospital departments, organizations and the public Attention to details is required in the performance of duties. Must be confident in your knowledge of the field, so that decisions may be made independently. Knowledge of medical terminology, coding, office procedures, physician and/or hospital billing procedures. Ability to multi-task and prioritize required.
