The Vice President, Cardiovascular Service Line has responsibility for managing operations of the hospital and hospital-based Cardiovascular Services for Excela Health, as well as help coordinate, promote and drive growth and efficiencies in operations for the overall service line, including medical group practices. This would include, but is not limited to: suitability of the physical location(s); availability and retention of talent; high levels of patient satisfaction; and steady growth in services and revenue across the market. The VP partners with Interventional and non-interventional leaders at the facilities to ensure that operating / procedural time is available and that appropriate equipment and devices are available in both hospital and ambulatory-based settings. This will require collaboration with supply chain leaders to achieve financial efficiencies in device selection that do not compromise quality, service, or experience He/she also oversees the development of annual plans for continued growth in patient volume; partners with a focus on profit and loss with hospital and medical group finance teams to develop and implement annual departmental budget(s); and works effectively to identify and meet the needs of patients and the community by demonstrating customer-focused behavior. The VP will also work closely with Excela Health Medical Group and Hospital Strategy and Development Leadership to identify new opportunities and help to recruit and attract resources to drive service line growth.

The Vice President, Cardiovascular Service Line serves as the leader in dyad partnership with the physician leader of the Cardiovascular Service Line for the Westmoreland Market and, in conjunction with administration at each facility, creates the vision for this service line. In this role as leader, he/she is responsible for supervising the development, implementation and organization of the overall program using innovation based on best practices as well as current and anticipated industry trends. The VP also coordinates the efforts between surgeons, proceduralists, hospital administration and staff, Medical Group Leadership, while tracking the progress of the program and identifying areas that require attention. He/she has responsibility for all program management, report generation and review, process improvement, patient satisfaction, facilities review and budget.

Essential Job Functions

  • Establish and maintain a safe working environment by assuring staff complies with safety, environmental, and infection control guidelines.

  • Assure proper use of safety equipment and devices and hold individuals accountable if non-compliant.

  • Assure completion of staff competencies including mandatory education and programs relative to job specific criteria.

  • Promptly investigate and resolve Significant Occurrence Reports and incident reports as necessary.

  • Align strategic compass with department goals, write compelling SMART goals in support of the organization's mission, vision, and values, and help employees understand importance of aligning goals with Excela Health.

  • Equitably and consistently apply and practice policies and procedures for all staff.

  • Practice and encourage staff readiness in compliance with agency regulations and guidelines.

  • Improve HCAP scores according to fiscal year targets and demonstrate year after year improvement in service to internal and external customers.

  • Respond to client service recovery issues within required time frame and to the satisfaction of the customer.

  • Lead department meetings, assuring off shifts and satellite offices receive timely and accurate information.

  • Maintain a daily meeting board for purpose of displaying problem solving activity.

  • Build and strengthen relations through two-way communication and diffuse sources of conflict.

  • Provide opportunities for staff to actively provide input into decision making process.

  • Encourage commitment of quality work throughout areas of responsibility.

  • Understand and effectively deploy the LEAN tools to streamline work processes, eliminating waste and redundancy while improving productivity.

  • Act on most urgent tasks and prioritize and delegate workable systems.

  • Use critical thinking skills to proactively resolve key issues that are possible troubles to productivity and engagement.

  • Lead process improvement initiatives for department and participate in LEAN projects outside of department.

  • Clearly articulate expectations of individuals and provide the materials and equipment to be successful.

  • Responsible for compliance, staffing, recognition, talent management, training and development within department.

  • Utilize employee engagement survey results in carrying out impact plans.

  • Establish performance measures to equitably evaluate staff using objective and job-based criteria.

  • Provide regular feedback, praise, and recognition by rewarding accomplishments and results appropriately.

  • Hold staff accountable for consistently modeling the behavioral standards.

  • Identify, evaluate, and select internal and external talent, assuring an acceptable fit with the Excela Health desired culture.

  • Provide opportunities for the education, training, and development of staff to help reach their highest potential.

  • Create actionable development plans and encourage learning from setbacks for future development.

  • Actively support and participate in succession planning initiatives by identifying high potentials and prepare them for possible future leadership opportunities within Excela Health.

  • Take responsibility for own professional growth and development by attending required EHA leadership programs and network with colleagues to seek out best practices.

  • Complete required appraisals in a timely manner adhering to performance management guidelines.

  • Manage inventory, waste, occupancy, expenses, revenue, and budgeting.

  • Consider financial impact of decisions, use financial concepts for decision making, and monitor financial performance.

  • Develop and manage department budget at or below budget expectations and consistent with adjusted volume variations.

  • Identify and implement revenue enhancement opportunities.

  • Seek opportunities to reduce operating costs while balancing quality resources.

  • Submit timely variance reports that display knowledge of expenses and demonstrates continual plans to reduce variances.

  • Stretch capital resources by extending life of existing assets.

  • Coordinate the selection of vendors through established internal procurement procedures in an effort to drive down supplier costs while maintaining quality standards.

Specialty Job Functions

  • Lead regularly scheduled meetings with hospital and EHMG, and other physicians and key staff.

  • Assist in the management and oversight of the day-to-day hospital-based facility operations and ambulatory clinic sites within the service line.

  • Develop standardized care plans with the surgeons including pre-op, post-op and discharge orders.

  • Ensure appropriate pre-op preparation for every patient.

  • Develop and oversee the creation of pre- and post-op teaching classes including the coordination of teaching materials with the physician’s office.

  • Monitor the measurement system for tracking surgical / procedural outcomes and patient satisfaction, and identify areas that require improvement; oversee the completion of public and specialty specific registries.

  • Monitor the measurement system for tracking key operational measures in the ambulatory setting, including but not limited to patient satisfaction, schedule utilization, etc.

  • Provide key results at Leadership Team meetings and for other stakeholders as necessary, including outcomes, progress against budget, patient satisfaction, complications, denied days, hospital-wide survey results, nurse call back results, etc.

  • Coordinate patient satisfaction events, including call backs or patient luncheons.

  • Oversee the development and on-going editing of unit-specific forms and patient education materials including Nurse Discharge Checklists, Patient Guidebooks, and other standardized materials for the program.

  • Develop a community education and seminar program inclusive of schedules, presenters, content and materials.

  • Create and oversee an ongoing quality improvement plan that supports the system’s desire to achieve top decile quality outcomes.

  • Implement Risk Reduction Strategies to eliminate OSHA recordable employee injuries and to eliminate preventable patient harm events including but not limited to excessive utilization of radiation or contrast materials, wrong site surgeries, surgical site infections, mortality.

  • Identify patient amenities and secure necessary resources to administer the services.

  • Work with EHMG/Hospital Leadership to identify opportunities for value-based programs, services and contracts across the Cardiovascular Service Line.

  • Identify and help with the development of growth initiatives across Service Line.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Public Administration, Healthcare Administration, or related field

  • Three (3) to five (5) years of experience managing a Cardiovascular related practice.

  • Strong leadership ability, good organizational skills, independent and critical thinking skills, sound judgment, and knowledge of legal aspects and liability of nursing practice.

  • Strong ability to communicate complex and/or controversial topics and concepts to a wide and diverse audience.

  • Experience developing new healthcare business opportunities a plus.

  • Strong healthcare financial management and business management skills.

  • Highly developed expertise in quantitative analysis to support definition and advancement for the hospitals goals and objectives.

  • Demonstrated success in building and maintaining positive, effective and productive relationships with administrative and clinical leadership.

  • Ability to act as liaison, between the administrative and medical staffs, Board of Directors and external stakeholders.

  • Ability to provide leadership to establish priorities and to develop and implement solutions.

  • Ability to understand physician’s viewpoints and needs, and work strategically in the best interest of patients and the hospital.

  • A strong reputation for sustained, inclusive, trust-based physician relations.

  • A high orientation to detail with proven analytical and financial skills.

  • A team player who excels in developing team momentum, enthusiasm and pride.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Business Administration or Healthcare Administration strongly preferred.

  • Experience in Healthcare setting.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • This position has direct supervisory responsibilities and serves as a coach and mentor for other positions in the department.

  • Management responsibilities include hiring, coaching, skills development, recognition and rewards, staff productivity and performance management.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

  • Incumbent will be scheduled based on operational need (rotate shifts, standby, on-call, etc.).

  • Travel may be expected locally between Excela Health locations.
