Job Summary: Position in the West Place Drop-In Center. The Therapeutic Activities Worker who will model recovery based behavior in a community based behavioral health program. A Drop-In Center is a central place for self-help, advocacy, education and socialization. As a therapeutic activities worker lead the job provides an opportunity for assisting mental health consumers on socializing and networking that addresses the isolation felt by many, especially those in mental health recovery

SHIFT: Monday, 1:00 PM-9:00 PM, Wednesday, 3:00 PM-8:00 PM, every other Saturday, 10:00 AM-6:00 PM. Days and hours are subject to change.

TECHNICAL STANDARDS

Essential Functions: Defined as duties specific to the job, that, if removed, would change the entire purpose of the job; to include the Essential Physical Demands and Essential Working Conditions of this position.

I. Core Essential Functions:

  • Follow an overall rehabilitation philosophy and provide guidance to fellow staff and clients in methods of achieving them.

  • Nonlinear: Recovery isn’t a step-by-step process but one based on continual growth, occasional setbacks and learning from experience.

  • Peer support: Mutual support plays an invaluable role in recovery

  • Respect: Acceptance and appreciation by society, communities, systems of care and consumers themselves are crucial to recovery.

  • Responsibility: Consumers are responsible for their own self-care and journeys of recovery.

  • Hope: Recovery’s central, motivating message is a better future — that people can and do overcome obstacles.

  • Engage drop in members in actively using the center to increase level of community integration.

  • Assist in preparing and cooking meals.

  • Assist in maintaining the cleanliness of the program.

  • Clean up of meal; wash dishes, silverware, pots, and pans

  • Putting the napkins in washer/dryer

  • Put clean pots, pans, dishes, silverware away after washing and drying

  • Take out garbage to dumpster

  • Sweep and mop area if necessary

  • Participate in and accompany members in outing and activities.

  • Ensure the safety of the program, program’s property, and individuals attending the program.

  • Follow safety policy, protocols as set forth by Excela Health Systems and Caregivers of SWPA

  • Assist at the front desk for designated times.

  • Welcome members to the program

  • Answer phone

  • Sign members in and out of program

  • Document inventory of all needed supplies.

  • Put necessary items on list in kitchen unit to be bought

  • Complete documentation that is associated with the program.

  • Have clients fill out information sheet every 6 months

  • Have clients fill out release of information every 6 months

  • Sign members into program

  • Sign members out of program

  • Follow all program and organization policies and procedures. 

II. Specialty Essential Functions:

  • Ability to effectively engage and motivate members to participate in activities

offered at Drop In

  • Act honestly and ethically in all member interactions

  • Ability to effectively work as a member of a multidisciplinary team and encourage building of natural community support

  • Closing of Drop-in center

  • Lock all interior and exterior doors

  • Set the alarm system to arm

  • Shut off all the lights in building

  • Turn off the coffee pot

  • Clean the coffee pot

  • Set up coffee brewer for next day

  • Closing out the register at the snack bar on a nightly basis

  • Counting the money from the snack bar and balancing the account

  • Putting the money into the safe at end of night

III. Marginal Functions: Defined as duties that are not essential in nature and do not take a considerable amount of time to complete (less than 10%).

  • Drives agency vehicles when necessary

  • Follows check-list for pre and post trip inspection

  • Follows Caregivers Policy on transportation

  • Safely transport individuals to and from various destinations

IV. Required Skills and Knowledge: Minimum level of education, skills and abilities necessary in performing the job.

Education:

  • Associate degree or higher in related field (Human Services, Education, Psychology, Social Work)

Certification / Licensure / Regulation:

  • Valid Driver’s license

  • CPR certified; Current Basic Life Support (BLS) approved curriculum of the American Heart Association (CPR and AED) program.

  • Child Abuse Clearance; Act 33/34

  • FBI Fingerprinting Act 73

  • Child mandated court Reporting Training

  • Must complete and pass a yearly drivers training course

  • Complete 18 hours a year of Mental Health Training

Prior Experience:

  • 1 to 2 years of Mental Health experience

Other Skills and Abilities:

  • Customer service skills

  • Knowledge of basic Office Equipment such as copier, fax machine, etc.

  • Proficiency in the use of Excel Spreadsheets, PowerPoint, and various software programs

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office including Outlook

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills

  • Strong leadership ability, independent thinking and decision-making ability; analytical problem solving skills, sound judgment; excellent oral and written communication skills, must be able to function in a team environment.

  • Strong time management and organizational skills; ability to work independently and in a team setting; creativity in treatment in various settings including inpatient, skilled nursing and outpatient clinics; ability to transition smoothly between various treatment settings; flexibility in scheduling.

  • Sound judgment, problem solving skills, strong oral and written communication skills, ability to follow directions from other team members; works independently assigned duties.

  • Ability to communicate with all members of the health care team
