This position is located on the ETIS II contract at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center.

FUNCTION OF POSITION

Works directly with flight projects and Alignment, Integration, and Test group engineers to plan, develop, and execute metrology and optical test operations.

Completes complex analysis of collected data and prepares detailed procedures and reports. Will lead a team of optical technicians and/or junior engineers in accomplishing assigned tasks.

May also perform other duties associated within area of assignment as directed by lead personnel or management.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide leadership and organization to the Optics Branch team supporting the HIRMES project to include budget and scheduling, reporting results and requirements compliance.

  • Design the optical test content of the project Cryo-0,-1, and -2 system level tests including development of optical ground support equipment.

  • Assist with integration, alignment and test of the HIRMES telescope to include planning, procedure development, preparing WOAs staffing and conducting cryogenic testing.

  • Writes clear and concise reports to the Optics Branch and flight projects of metrology operations.

  • Maintains in-depth and organized project support documentation to include datasheets, analysis, pictures and setup drawings.

  • Writes detailed procedures for metrology operations and equipment use.

  • Coordinates with Optics Branch and project representatives on schedules, objectives, etc.

  • Maintains accountability for data collection systems and computing resources assigned to project.

  • Monitor safety conditions of lab facilities and advise supervisor on deficiencies and problems.

  • Develops presentations and presents or can be expected to be a part of design reviews, safety reviews and other technical presentations.

  • May also perform temporary duties in other areas or other duties associated within area of assignment

NATURE OF POSITION CHALLENGES

  • Complex task assignments requiring considerable creativity and judgment in accomplishing tasks that support project cost and schedule requirements.

  • Tasks will involve interfacing with customers, management, engineers, and technicians. Therefore, excellent oral and written communication skills are highly desirable, as well as the ability to function autonomously or in a team environment.

  • Task complexity and duration may vary. Flexibility and adaptability is highly desirable. Excellent organizational and time management skills are highly desirable.

  • Ability to adapt to weekend and holiday support on short notice and extended hours as required.

SUPERVISOR GUIDANCE

Works under the general guidance of a project engineer or task manager. Is technically responsible for meeting project requirements. Should be capable of working with minimal supervision.

SUPERVISION OF OTHERS

Does not normally provide direct supervision of other personnel unless assigned as a lead project engineer or task manager. Provides technical direction to technicians and junior engineers, as required, for completion of work assignments.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS

  • Education or years’ experience commensurate with skill level required for position complexity as determined by management. Fifteen or more years experience in optical alignment, cryogenic test and integration of space optical systems or similar instrumentation is desired

  • MS or higher degree in Optical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Physics.

  • Will typically have specialized knowledge/experience of one or more aspects related to optical metrology and testing. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are highly desirable.

  • Working knowledge of the operation and maintenance of large hazardous research aerospace test facilities.

  • Ability to use own judgment and decisions to allow continuity of work flow.

  • Must be self-motivated and a "Team Player" with good interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Must be able to organize time and assignments to prioritize efforts for maximum effectiveness.

  • Understanding of specialized devices such as laser systems, interferometers, optical test equipment.

  • Must be capable of passing required physical examinations and successfully completing assigned training or other related training or certifications as directed by ETIS II management.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION

EQUIPMENT AND MACHINES INVOLVED IN WORK TASK

  • Optical instrumentation such as theodolites, transits, tilt levels, autocollimators and alignment telescopes.

  • General tools and mechanical inspection equipment

  • Scissor lifts

  • Class 1, 2, and 3 lasers and with training, Class 4

  • Metrology systems such as laser trackers, radars and articulating coordinate measuring arms.

  • Desktop computers utilizing Microsoft office suite software including Word and Excel.

CRITICALITY OF ATTENDANCE

Work assignments are usually during normal work hours, but flexibility is frequently necessary to support test schedules and operations. Testing may occur any day or time of day, depending on the schedule and test requirements, and may require working off-shifts or weekends and travel. Attendance as dictated by the tasks assigned is required to maintain team effectiveness.
