Munson Healthcare Phlebotomy Technician or Medical Assistant in Grayling, Michigan

Job Summary: Responsible for specimen collection from patients of all ages and preparing the specimen for transport to the appropriate laboratory departments. Other responsibilities include: Answering phones, problem solving, customer Service, receive patients, visitors, and specimens at reception desk. Other clerical duties as assigned.
Additionally for Cancer & Infusion Clinic: Rooming patients, taking vital signs and patient history, maintaining exam rooms as needed.
Minimum Requirements: High school graduate or equivalent. Formal phlebotomy and clerical training preferred or at least one year of experience in such a position. BLS/CPR or obtain within 3 months of hire.
CENA or MA training/certification preferred.
Additionally, Certified Phlebotomy Tech III requires National ASCP certification as a Phlebotomy Technician (PBT) (preferred) but equivalent certification acceptable.
Position Accountabilities :
Verify patient identity, explain procedure, collect blood specimens from all patients.
Enter orders and patient demographic into electronic data system as required.
Deliver all collected specimens to appropriate areas of the laboratory, in-patients, and physician office. Preparation should include name on the specimen, all demographic and insurance information and Advanced Beneficiary Notices when needed and follow up on missing information.
Proper handling of urine drug screen and chain of custody forms.
Maintain files as necessary.
Monitor specimen collection material inventories. Discard outdated supplies.
Maintain specimen collection area and trays in well stocked, clean fashion.
Distribute reports as necessary.
Clean glassware as needed.
Answer phone calls, forward calls to appropriate individuals.
Phone reports to physician offices as requested.
Exhibit professional and courteous presence toward patients, co-workers and visitors.
Participates in laboratory Unit Based Council or other hospital related quality improvement initiatives.
Other duties as requested or assigned.

Additional Position Accountabilities:
Prepares patient and room for clinic visits, aids provider during treatment/exam as needed.
Performs intake for patients who present for their clinic visits. Intake includes reason for visit, medication history, vital signs.
Maintain and review patient records, charts and other pertinent information, preparing them for provider visit.
Maintains exam rooms for necessary supplies, materials and equipment.
Transcribing electronic order for lab tests into the computer.
Serves as a nurse extender in the infusion room by delivering meal trays, dropping off specimens to the laboratory, obtaining vital signs per nurse direction, providing comfort to infusion center patients.
Functions within delegated tasks; demonstrates an understanding of data presented and brings abnormal patient condition or lab results to provider’s attention.
Assisting front office staff as needed.
Assisting Nurse Navigator and Nurse Manager as needed.
