Job Description:

Created after 9-11-2001, the Department of Homeland Security consolidated numerous agencies' data centers for central management. GDIT plays a key role in the Department's IT integration strategy through its Data Center-1 program. GDIT's DC-1 program is committed to delivering an efficient, responsive, and mature data center operation through excellence in service delivery, performance, and continual service improvement

Provides subject matter expertise and engineering support for VMWare in a production environment.

Hands-on experience with VMWare vSphere, VMWare SRM (Site Recovery Manager, vCloud Director, Cisco UCS, Cisco Nexus, Cisco 1000v, NetApp Storage (Flexpod)).

Experience in implementing a Service Based – Self provisioning architecture leveraging VMWare and other Cloud Management Platforms (CMP) in a large Data Center required.

Provides technical knowledge and analysis of highly specialized applications and operational environment, high-level functional systems analysis, design etc.

Delivers technological requirements in a virtualized cloud environment to meet business needs.

Provides advanced technical knowledge and analysis of highly specialized applications and operational environment, high-level functional systems analysis, design, integration, documentation, training, and implementation advice on complex problems

Participates as needed in all phases of software development with emphasis on the planning, analysis, testing, integration, documentation, training, and presentation phases.

Applies principles, methods, and knowledge of specific functional areas of expertise to specific task order requirements

Top required skills

  • Position requires knowledge of virtual environments, to include VMware products and solutions. 5+ years of recent experience Required.

  • Desired training/certifications include: VCP (Vmware Certified Professional) VDI (Citrix XenDesktop, Citrix XenApp ,Virtual Desktop) desired

  • Experience with various Hypervisors a plus (vSphere, Hyper-V, ESXi, KVM, etc.).

  • Experience with Cloud concepts and technologies (vCloud Director, Amazon, Azure, OpenStack, etc.).

  • Experience with Cloud orchestration tools a plus (vRealize, vCenter Orchestrator, etc.).

  • Works with vendors to understand the applications, strategies and roadmaps for current, updated, and emerging technologies.

  • Drives automation initiatives for VM creation, configuration, and provisioning

  • Develops business cases to justify strategic investment in systems architecture, including analysis of future growth and cost reduction opportunities.

  • Provides technical engineering and design review for new server systems, applications, infrastructure, and hardware.

  • Identifies and reports Key Performance Indicators, focusing on capacity planning and performance analysis.

  • Administers VMware hosts and guests with multiple operating systems, including provisioning, monitoring, and P2V or V2V migrations.

  • Provides proactive maintenance and support of virtualization server hardware and hypervisor, including patching and driver / firmware updates.

  • Provides third-level support for incident resolution related to virtual server infrastructure.

  • Tests and implement new tools to better manage virtual server infrastructure.

  • Coordinates and participates in key process improvements and develop long-term strategic goals for operating system and hypervisor platforms in conjunction with system/data owners and department managers.

  • Cross-functional collaboration to ensure availability, reliability, and scalability of corporate servers to meet business demands.

  • Implements policies, procedures, and technologies to ensure server security.

  • Manages and maintains Intel-based systems and systems software.

  • Provides 24x7x365 on-call pager support and work weekends and/or holidays, as necessary.

Certifications

  • VMware Certified Professional (VCP) certification is highly preferred.

  • Microsoft MCSE, MCITP, Redhat RHCSA, or RHCE certification is a plus.

  • ITIL v3 or 4 a plus

  • AWS or Azure Certifications a plus
