The Administrative Nursing Supervisor provides leadership toward fulfilling the MHS mission by providing operational support and ensuring quality of patient care delivery according to the nursing process.

Bed Control Coordination

  • Coordinates bed availability proactively through the incorporation of daily bed briefings, use of bed board information, daily rounding to gather real-time census information and to expedite admissions and discharges.

  • Displays the ability to complete multiple tasks coordinating bed assignments to meet patient needs, reduce internal transfers, and reduce barriers to unnecessary delays.

  • Assists in the development of obtaining proper medical information from admission sources to reduce delays.

  • Maintains accurate and up-to-date knowledge of bed assignment practices based on unit-specific admission criteria.

  • Coordinates information from daily bed briefing, OR, SPU, Cardiac Cath, POP, Specials schedule to develop daily bed Plan.

  • Establishes frequent communication with ED, admission center, and PACU for patient placement to increase hospital confidence in patient placement.

  • Determines the level of prioritization for each patient based on the level of care needs and bed availability.

  • Determines the availability to work under pressure during periods of increased workload while meeting customer needs for bed placement.

  • Stays informed of case-management activities to maintain discharge potential for stable patients while supporting criteria-based admissions and discharges.

  • Participates in Code Green decisions for Critical Care and ED and provides feedback to the on-site or on-call administrator. Utilizes all available resources to avoid hospital diversion.

Operations Planning & Support

  • Participates in formulation, revision and advancement of strategic short and long-range plans for Nursing services.

  • Is responsible for off-shift/or weekend management of Nursing Department and hospital operations in the absence of Care Unit administration and department managers.

  • Coordinates off-shift and/or weekend operations, including staffing, clinical practice, resource utilization, and personnel management.

  • Responds to all Care Unit Problems and/or situations that develop in the absence of the Care Unit administration and department managers to promote optimal operations and issue resolution; assures verbal and written follow-up.

  • Responds to telecommunications media by notification of Corporate Communications Department and on-call Care Unit administrator.

  • Works in consultation with the administrator on-call for unusual situations/sentinel events.

  • Assumes leadership role in the implementation and coordination of hospital emergency procedures.

  • Collaborates with other Care Unit leadership, physicians, medical directors and colleagues to promote interdisciplinary activities and implementation of strategic initiatives.

  • Ensures interdepartmental and interdisciplinary communication, teamwork and collaborations with all supporting departments and designated liaisons in the achievement of the Care Unit and nursing goals and objectives.

  • Demonstrates ability to organize work and manage time effectively by completing assignments in the allotted time.

  • Promotes effective working relationships through timely, accurate communication among colleagues and between departments and disciplines.

  • Keeps informed on current operations through participation in Nursing and Care Unit meetings, committees, work groups, and through verbal and written communications.

  • Communicates importance of patient satisfaction and champions priorities for improving performance.

  • Contributes to building physicians and interdepartmental cooperation and collaboration by keeping colleagues informed and communicating effectively.

  • Recognizes and rewards behaviors consistent with MHS values and organization principles.

  • Consistently demonstrates flexibility required for efficient Care Unit operations.

  • Serves as a member of various Care Unit and Nursing committees as required.

Clinical Management

  • Supports adherence to clinical nursing practices and nursing standards f care in accordance with overall nursing standards of care, changes in patient populations, as well as external standards.

  • Facilitates clinical services integration to provide efficient patient flow, system efficiency and interdepartmental cooperation for seamless patient care across the health care continuum.

  • Provides support and guidance to staff; actively participates in the provision of direct patient care when necessary and functions as a clinical role model.

  • Works collaboratively with other disciplines to ensure comprehensive patient centered, outcome driven approach to care.

  • Ensures decisions support the provision of high quality, cost-effective patient care.

  • Identifies and recommends approaches to improve efficiency and effectiveness of patient care and placement from admission discharge.

  • Participates in the development, implementation and evaluation of policies, procedures and programs to meet changing patient needs and populations.
