Interventional Radiology Nursing Skills

Assists tech as necessary

  • Ensures all supplies and equipment are in room and provides to team as necessary

  • Opens sterile packs and supplies utilizing aseptic technique

  • Ensures that all medications are administered and labeled per policy

  • Maintains records of procedures and reports any unusual occurrences

  • Checks rooms, material, and equipment for proper care and handling

  • Assists in control of traffic and personnel to ensure proper control of infection and asepsis

  • Adheres to sharps safety policy and protocol

  • Adheres to procedure room dress code

  • When scrubbing, performs same duties as Radiology Tech

  • Maintains proficiency:

  • Unit specific equipment

  • Trouble shooting equipment

  • Handling and preparing specimens

  • Maintains a therapeutic relationship with patients and family while providing care in a high stress environment with multiple priorities

  • Cares for and maintains dignity of deceased patients (post mortem, medical examiner/autopsy)

  • Maintains stock of procedural room and holding room

  • Demonstrates consistent communication with charge RN

  • Acts as a resource to other members of the team

  • Handles implants per policy

  • Manages the complex care of critically ill patients as needed

  • Applies critical care theory in care of patients as needed

  • Calculates, titrates and administers medications, IV solutions, and skin testing, per policy

  • Thrombolytic Therapy:

  • Stroke protocol

  • Initiation and maintenance of invasive monitoring.

  • Rhythm and 12 lead ECG interpretation

  • Defibrillation

  • Possess knowledge and skills necessary to assist the physician with the insertion of invasive lines/devices

  • Moderate Sedation

  • Recognizes appropriate dosage and proficient in administration of medication

  • Monitors patient vital signs and maintains IV access as per policy

  • Recognizes changes in patient’s condition and responds appropriately

  • Documents medications, vital signs, patient response and special instructions

  • Initiates IV therapy as per policy/procedure, taking into consideration vein condition, patient age, skin condition, patient positioning, and cognition

  • POCT: Blood glucose Monitoring

  • Provides respiratory support (Pulse ox, suctioning, wall and portable oxygen therapy)

  • Problem focused physical assessment

  • Cardiac monitors:

  • Customizes/edits/reviews patient alarms/information

  • Trouble shoots poor waveforms and equipment problems

  • Notifies supervisor/biomedical of equipment failure/problem

  • Phlebotomy skills

  • Blood culture, T&C; specimens, etc.

  • Central venous access device

  • Labeling of specimens Performance Measures

  • Demonstrates appropriate skill for area of practice.

  • 100% compliance with Universal Protocol (patient/site identification, time out)

  • 100% compliance with identification, labeling, handling specimens

  • Utilizes physician choice of supplies to carry out procedures.

  • Compliance with required Stroke education

  • 100% compliance with Nurse verification of rhythm with change in patient condition.
