Trinity Health Mental Health Technician in Darby, Pennsylvania

Under the direction of the Registered Nurse or Clinical Supervisor, the Mental Health Technician is responsible for the performance of selected patient care activities that do not require full counseling certification or professional nurse skills, judgment, and knowledge and is in accordance with the Mission and Values and policies of Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital.

Demonstrates knowledge and compliance with the Hospital Safety and Infection Control policies as required by OSHA and the Patient Safety Program.

  • Consistently demonstrates knowledge of universal precautions, isolation procedures, and other infection control measures.

  • Provides a safe environment for all patients, employees, and visitors.

  • Identifies safety problems encountered during the course of work that if corrected may result in the prevention of accident/injury to patients, employees and visitors and reports problems to appropriate supervisor or the Patient Safety Hotline 610-237-7377.

  • Applies necessary measures to improve patient safety and promote risk reduction for patients by:

  • Demonstrating through one the following: policy implementation, direct observation, video review / testing, skills lab / proficiency testing, or written exam)

  • Medical / healthcare error reporting.

  • Aware of sentinel events definition and reporting procedure.

  • Interdisciplinary collaborative team approach to patient care planning.

  • Correctly Identifies patient using proper patient identifiers

  • Department –Specific Patient Safety

  • Attends mandatory in-service education programs as required.

  • Completes all mandatory competencies as required.

  • Seeks opportunities to prevent accidents/injuries to self and others.

  • Adheres to hospital PPD policy.

  • Displays/wears Hospital issued Photo Identification Badge at all times.

Provides physical care compassionately and supervises patients daily activities.

  • Takes vital signs (temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure) in an accurate and precise manner and records results on the graphic sheet in accordance with charting standards. Informs the Registered Nurse immediately if vital signs deviate from normal standards.

  • Obtains and records heights and weights on admission and as otherwise indicated.

  • Observes nutritional and fluid intake on patients and reports unusual occurrences to nurses as needed.

  • Is aware of any patient on special dietary requirements and supports patients in this regard as needed.

  • Observes and records intake and output when indicated.

  • Performs glucose monitoring and records results as needed.

  • Responds to medical emergencies per unit protocol.

  • Obtains, records and accurately reports results of glucometer reading as assigned by the registered nurse.

  • Transports specimens to laboratory and performs errands as requested by charge nurse (Pharmacy, x-ray) as needed.

  • Escorts patients to off unit appointments as needed

  • Supports patients in maintaining personal hygiene in a dignified manner.

  • Performs total daily hygiene in a compassionate and dignified manner for patients unable to do so themselves including providing assistance with dressing and provision of toilet training when indicated.

  • Participates in admission and discharge procedures as per unit routine at all times.

  • Obtains venous lab specimens as ordered

  • Performs EKG’s as ordered.

  • Monitors the tone of the unit through rounds at all times.

  • Encourages assigned patients to attend milieu activities daily.

  • Promotes and encourages socialization at meals daily.

  • Participates in therapeutic activities as assigned, (e.g. art/group therapy, community meeting, and other groups).

  • Ensures balance of rest and activity according to nursing care plan at all times.

  • Participates in secluding and restraining patients as per unit routine and nursing policy in a compassionate and dignified manner.

Maintains a safe environment.

  • Reports malfunctioning equipment immediately.

  • Performs unit responsibilities as assigned at all times

  • Identifies objects, which may be dangerous to the patient population and responds per unit procedure at all times.

  • Performs searches, both unit and body, as per unit procedure in a dignified and safe manner.

  • Understands and implements suicidal and special precautions as per unit procedure and nursing policy at all times.

  • Understands the purpose of incident reports and utilizes accordingly as needed.

  • Demonstrates understanding of emergency procedures, fire drills, evacuation procedures, and disaster plan according to Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital standards.

Maintains therapeutic and dignified behavior with patients and families.

  • Demonstrates an understanding of the communication skills of listening, seeking clarification, and sending clear messages at all times.

  • Always maintains a non-judgmental, non-threatening, and therapeutic approach with patients.

  • Consistently works towards establishing a therapeutic relationship with assigned patients.

  • Identifies effect of own actions on patients and environment at all times.

  • Is able to establish a helpful relationship with a variety of patients at all times.

  • Sets daily goals in conjunction with the team treatment plan.

  • Implements appropriate actions for assigned patients to achieve goals at all times.

  • Models appropriate dress conversation and problem solving to patient. Always acts as a role model to patients regarding appropriate male or female behavior.

  • Consistently demonstrates understanding of the difficulties patients face in attending to activities of daily life.

  • Daily supports patients in performing the activities of daily living in a helpful and non-punitive manner at all times.

  • Provides reality orientation for assigned patients at all times

  • Sets limits with assigned patients according to the team treatment plan at all times.

  • Participates in discharge planning as needed.

  • Participates with the nurse in altering the discharge plan as indicated by the patient progress made during the shift.

Exhibits effective written and verbal communication with various team members.

  • Attends and participates in report according to protocol daily.

  • Demonstrates an understanding of the purpose and use of the team treatment plan and utilized interventions in same during implementation of patient care as needed..

  • Participates in the multidisciplinary treatment plan/treatment team meeting as needed.

  • Reports observation of patients behavior to the registered nurse as indicated.

  • Reports observation of the overall unit at all times.

  • Demonstrates an understanding of the commitment process and patients legal rights.

  • Receives incoming calls from patients and general public, maintaining patient confidentiality where indicated.

  • Provides referrals and recommendations as appropriate.

  • Interprets functions, policy and procedures to patients. Refer to charge nurse if patients seek further clarification as needed

  • Obtains information from families when necessary.

  • Documents in accordance with unit policies and procedures and charting standards at all times.

Crisis Management

  • Assists patients to establish goals.

  • Recognizes signs of potentially dangerous situations.

  • Uses de-escalation techniques.

  • Uses limit setting and redirection.

  • Maintains appropriate boundaries.

  • Is aware of Psychiatric Emergency Assistance Team Procedures.

  • Is aware of psychosocial stressors and precipitating factors.

  • Recognizes loss and grief issues.

  • Is able to evaluate support systems.

  • Assesses suicide risk factors.

  • Assesses homicide risk factors.

  • Assesses potential for violence.

  • Recognizes signs of drug and alcohol abuse.

  • Able to recognize and intervene with anxiety symptoms.

  • Recognizes acute intoxication.

  • Assesses coping skills

At least one of the following is required:

  • A bachelor's degree with major course work in sociology, social work, psychology, gerontology, anthropology, political science, history, criminal justice, theology, nursing, counseling, education or a related field.

  • A high school diploma or equivalency and 12 semester credit hours in sociology, social welfare, psychology, gerontology or other social science and 2 years of experience in public or private human services with 1 year of mental health direct care experience.

  • A high school diploma or equivalency and 3 years of mental health direct care experience in public or private human services with employment as a mental health staff person prior to January 1, 1992.

PA State Child Abuse Clearance and FBI Background Check required. PA PATCH report required.

  • Ability to communicate with and sustain good interpersonal relations with people of diverse backgrounds and educational levels.

  • Ability to act rationally, compassionately and professionally in stressful situations.

  • Good communication skills-both oral and written.

  • Total body motor coordination and dexterity required to facilitate the performance of assigned responsibilities.

One to two years of experience working in a Mental Health field.
