Trinity Health ECHO TECH in Darby, Pennsylvania

Performance of echocardiographic studies (M Mode, 2D and color Doppler) and trans-esophageal echocardiograms on inpatients and outpatients as requested by the physician.

*Echo/Doppler: *

  • Instructs patient about test with regard to the cultural and age related needs of the adult and geriatric patient, and adjusts communication accordingly.

  • Maintains patient privacy.

  • Puts patient information into machine

  • Positions patient correctly

  • Places transducer on chest in appropriate area to best observe heart structures.

  • Recognizes abnormalities and records them.

  • Performs accurate M mode, 2D and color Doppler according to department standards

  • Demonstrates knowledge of cardiac anatomy and physiology. Can name anatomical sites

  • Can identify abnormal flow patterns and abnormal 2D findings. Calls significant change to the attention of the physician.

  • Calculates accurate measurements prior to physician interpretation.

  • Quantifies Doppler flow patterns for physician interpretation

  • Performs stat bedside studies when patient’s condition warrants.

  • Cleans patient after the procedure.

  • Returns bed to low position with call light and needed belongings within reach.

  • Cleans, maintains, and stocks equipment after each use.

  • Maintains open lines of communication with other members of the department.

  • Demonstrates ability to prevent, recognize and report abuse.

Stress Echo Testing:

  • Instructs patient about test with regard to cultural and age specific needs of the adult and geriatric patient, and adjusts communication accordingly.

  • Maintains privacy

  • Obtains baseline echo

  • Obtains post exercise views within 60 seconds, paying close attention of patient safety and quality

  • Reviews with Cardiologist to determine best views.

  • Cleans and maintains equipment after each use.

*Echo Lab Processes: *

  • Appropriately troubleshoots and identifies equipment problems, notifies coordinator and clinical engineering in a timely manner.

  • Aware of resource consumption. Identifies duplication of studies to physician.

  • Maintains a safe environment at all times during the study with special consideration of the medical, age-related, and cultural needs of the patient.

  • Maintains a neat work area.

  • Supports Code Blue or emergency process in the department.

  • Displays effective use of time and organizational skills.

*Clerical Duties: *

  • Prints out schedule every morning

  • Photocopies demographics/insurance information

  • Utilizes log book system to enter patient information

  • Proof reads echo reports before placed on patient chart

  • Collaborates and delivers patient reports when necessary.

  • Puts patient information into machine

  • Records all information

  • Measures and prepares Echo for physician to read

  • Sends report to patient’s physician.

*Patient Education: *

  • Incorporates reinforcement of education into procedures (ECHO cardiogram).

  • Individualizes educational communication based on age, cultural and spiritual values.

  • Assists with monitoring learning needs, readiness to learn and barriers to learning.

  • Communicates patient education to health care team members.

  • Utilizes and trouble shoots the following equipment:

  • Computer

  • Copier
