Clinical Manager, Nutrition Research

Department Description:The BIDMC Clinical Research Center provides the staff, environment and resources to carry out medical research studies for investigators in all clinical disciplines at BIDMC. The CRC is a resource to investigators providing excellent clinical research nursing, sleep research services, other specialized testing, a research bionutrition program, and clinical research coordination assistance. Using modern techniques of study design, data acquisition, and data analysis, research protocols are implemented, while maintaining the high standard of patient care for which the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center is known. The Clinical Mgr-Research Nutrition in the BIDMC CRC oversees the bionutrition group supporting nutrition & metabolism research. This position also provides direct nutrition services and manages the metabolic kitchen of the Clinical Research Center.

Job Summary:The Clinical Manager - Research Nutrition reports to the Program Director. This position is responsible for the overall direction, coordination and management of the Nutrition Department of the Clinical Research Center, which includes management of the metabolic kitchen, patient care, protocol implementation as well as development of nutrition-related projects, research and education programs.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Develops and plans for research projects; Collaborates with investigators in the planning and implementation of research projects including review of literature, designing the nutritional component of research protocols, and implementing the diets, metabolic testing, and body composition measurements consistent with the protocol constraints, general nutrition principles & the needs of the subject.

  • .Coordinates and integrates clinical and administrative aspects of dietetics to provide quality nutritional care in a research environment. Maintains standards of TJC and all government agencies; implements changes and monitors compliance. Sets the standard, control and monitoring for food safety throughout the process of procurement, storage, preparation and patient delivery.

  • Develops, updates, and revises food composition tables and nutrient analysis programs utilized specifically for the CRC. Evaluates food served for conformance to quality standards, dietary prescription, and dietary requirements of the protocol.

  • Plans calculates and implements diets of research participants consistent with research protocol constraints, general nutrition principles and individual participant needs. Directs and monitors production and service of all research diets. Participates in developing/testing innovative recipes to meet nutrient specifications for unusual food combinations.

  • Performs detailed body composition and/or bone density measurements with DXA and bio-electrical impedance machine and indirect calorimetry testing according to protocol guidelines. Assists in directing nutrition tests/ procedures.

  • Plans, conducts, and evaluates in-service training programs for metabolic kitchen staff responsible for measuring, weighing, and preparing food items for research diets. Assists in evaluating and utilizes appropriate methodology in research protocol development.

  • Coordinates and provides individual patient nutritional care including nutrition assessment, patient care planning, and implementation and monitoring, nutrition counseling and referrals, medical record documentation and nutritional recommendations consistent with the Department of Nutrition at BIDMC. Works in close cooperation with research staff, maintaining close patient contact

  • Educates physicians/scientists, dietetic interns, students and the public in subject specialties relating to clinical research studies and expertise. Serves as a resource person and lecturer in subject areas related to clinical research or expertise. Conducts and/or participates in in-service education programs for all disciplines

  • Responsible for the daily operations of the Clinical Research Center Metabolic Kitchen. Responsible for scheduling staff for kitchen coverage 7 days per week, training and overseeing continued job-specific competencies.

  • Under the direction of the Administrative Director, Clinical Research Programs develops the center's annual budget. Monitors expenses and cost recovery on an ongoing basis. Develops budgets for individual projects utilizing the center

  • Has the authority to direct and support employees daily work activities. Has the direct responsibility to undertake the following employment actions: hiring, termination, corrective action and performance reviews. Direct Reports: More than 7 Indirect Reports: None

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree required.

  • 5-8 years related work experience required and 0-1 years supervisory/management experience required

  • 3-5 years previous clinical research experience

  • Certification as a DXA technologist (to be obtained within 9 months of employment)

  • Experience with computer systems required, including web based applications and some Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access.

  • 1-3 years supervisory/management experience

Physical Nature of the Job:

Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently to move objects. Some elements of the job are sedentary, but the employee will be required to stand for periods of time or move through out the hospital campus
