State of Massachusetts Chief Medical Officer - Part Time in Boston, Massachusetts

We are currently seeking a Chief Medical Officer (CMO) for the Public Health Hospital System (PHHS) with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH). Our selected candidate will be at the forefront of driving clinical excellence and shaping healthcare policies that align with our mission of promoting public health and equity. Collaborating closely with the Deputy Commissioner of PHHS and senior leadership, you will be instrumental in providing essential clinical leadership to ensure the delivery of high-quality care across our four (4) public health hospitals. Your expertise will not only guide hospital policies and programs, but also play a key role in advancing initiatives aimed at addressing racial disparities, eliminating health inequalities, and improving population health outcomes. The CMO responsibilities will extend beyond traditional clinical oversight to encompass strategic decision-making, advocacy, and public engagement. As a key advisor, you will lend your medical insights to shape hospital policies, regulatory proposals, and public information campaigns. Your leadership in infection prevention and control programs will be paramount in safeguarding patient safety and regulatory compliance, particularly in the face of evolving public health challenges. In addition to your clinical leadership, you will serve as a bridge between PHHS and various governmental and professional entities, leveraging your expertise to influence broader healthcare initiatives and policies. Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive): * Advise the Deputy Commissioner of PHHS and senior leadership on hospital policies, programs, and regulatory issues. * Provide medical oversight and serve as a clinical resource for PHHS and hospital Chief Medical Officers (CMOs). * Direct quality and safety programs for public health hospitals, focusing on improving care outcomes, patient safety, and regulatory compliance. * Lead PHHS efforts in racial equity, eliminating health disparities, and advancing population health initiatives. * Advise and participate in public information efforts, representing PHHS in media engagements. * Review guidelines, papers, and regulatory proposals with clinical implications, ensuring compliance. * Serve as a member of the Public Health Hospital Governing Board, supporting hospital CMOs in implementing recommendations and process changes. * Serve as a medical liaison with governmental and professional groups, representing PHHS on advisory boards and commissions. * Provide clinical guidance and coordination during public health emergencies, ensuring readiness and response. * Manage assigned public health initiatives on behalf of the Deputy Commissioner of PHHS. * Oversee the PHHS Infection Prevention and Control Plan/Program, providing feedback and guidance to public health hospitals. * Collaborate with CEO meetings, committee chairs, peer review programs, chart reviews, billing compliance, and credentialing programs to support PHHS clinical operations. * *Required Qualifications: * Current and valid registration as a Physician under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine; Board certification from the American Board of Medical Specialties in a relevant medical specialty, such as public health, preventive medicine, or a related field. * Proficient in diagnostic and treatment methods utilized in the field of medicine. * Demonstrated expertise in theories, practices, methods, and principles of general medicine pertinent to the care and treatment of the physically ill. * Understanding of healthcare planning and regulatory frameworks. * Commitment to advancing health equity and addressing health disparities. * Familiarity with social determinants of health and equity, particularly racial equity. * Comprehensive understanding of public health principles and a breadth of expertise in various public health issues. * Excellent communication skills, including adeptness in media relations and delivering presentations before large audiences. * Proficient in reading and interpreting documents such as patient profiles, medication orders, and medical records. * *Preferred Qualifications: * Strong understanding of public health principles, epidemiology, and health policy. * Ability to convey complex medical concepts to diverse audiences, including the media and policymakers. * Experience in advising on policy, program development, and regulatory compliance in a public health or governmental setting. * Demonstrated ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and build partnerships with external stakeholders. * Adaptability to changing situations, adept at meeting emergency or evolving program requirements. * Ability to analyze and determine the applicability of medical data to draw conclusions and make appropriate recommendations. * Ability to plan and conduct training and instruction in medical related matters for other physicians. * Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint and Teams.
