SUMMARY

Bering Straits Native Corporation (BSNC) is currently seeking a qualified BSNC shareholder or BSNC descendant of a shareholder for a Shareholder Advocate position. Under the direction of the President/CEO and in accordance with BSNC guidelines, policies, and federal laws, this position shall provide senior management level leadership in developing and leading ongoing Shareholder development. Administer and perform duties to ensure that BSNC’s shareholders and descendants are provided timely information on employment, advancement, training, and educational opportunities and any benefits provided by BSNC. Must be flexible and available to perform other duties in support of BSNC’s various programs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design and implement strategies to align shareholder development with organizational goals and business needs.

  • Work in close coordination with Corporate Communications, Human Resources, and Shareholder Departments to facilitate communication between the BSNC shareholder base and corporate management.

  • Actively work to recruit shareholders and descendants for open positions and source qualified shareholders.

  • Provide ongoing review and metrics related to open positions and hiring of qualified shareholders.

  • Travel to regional communities, as scheduled by the CEO, on an annual basis to:

  • Present information concerning BSNC shareholder benefits;

  • Present information to local entities on the BSNC Young Providers’ Award;

  • Update shareholder contact information;

  • Provide shareholders information on job opportunities;

  • Encourage qualified shareholders and descendants to apply for the Summer Internship Program and Bering Straits Foundation Scholarship;

  • Engage and collaborate with community resources on programs and information.

  • Develop, track, and manage fulfillment of the Shareholder Employee Development Plans.

  • Create training and other internal materials to support the company’s shareholder preference and continuously reinforce and measure progress.

  • Work closely with the Shareholder Records Department to build and update the database of shareholder and descendant records.

  • Act as a resource for shareholder employees who have questions about employment processes or policies.

  • Work with the Bering Straits Foundation to develop and improve shareholder outreach and assist in tracking scholarship recipients after completion of their degree and program.

  • Work in close coordination with Corporate Communications, Human Resources, and Shareholder Departments to maintain and improve the Summer Internship Program and assist in communication and recruitment for the program.

  • Work with outside agencies, other Alaska Native Corporations (ANC’s), relative to opportunities for training and education of shareholder employees.

  • Assist shareholders and descendants with career exploration resources, resources and planning assistance for career advancement, higher education and vocational training, work readiness assistance, resume writing, and interview skills.

  • Create and implement a leadership development and management training program for shareholders and descendants.

  • Track date and provide quarterly or more frequent reports, as requested, to the President & CEO and Shareholder Outreach Committee – if directed by the President & CEO – on shareholder employment levels, scholarship awards, and any benefits (bereavement, etc.) that BSNC provides for its shareholders and descendants.

  • Work in collaboration with the members of the Board of Directors of the Beringia Settlement Trust to ensure that programs and benefits provided by the Trust to shareholders are consistent with BSNC’s mission statement and the founding principles of the Beringia Settlement Trust.

QUALIFICATIONS - EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATION

Required (Minimum) Qualifications

  • Applicants must be a BSNC shareholder or a BSNC descendant of a shareholder

  • Bachelor’s Degree

  • Five (5) years’ experience in an exempt-level position working with various stakeholders in the creation and management of programs and processes related to employee development

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Knowledge of the organizational structure of BSNC

  • Highly organized

  • Ability to meet and interact with shareholders and descendants, the public and staff in a pleasant and courteous manner

  • Ability to work well with others

  • Ability to follow direction and attention to detail

  • Must have positive, friendly attitude and be a team player

  • Ability to meet deadlines

Preferred

  • Preferred candidate will have a Bachelor’s Degree in employee development, education, human resources, or related field.

This position requires the ability to operate conventional office equipment such as laptop or desktop computers, fax machines, phones, copiers, printers, or binding machines. Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for bending, stooping, sitting, walking or standing for prolonged periods of time; and may require occasional lifting, pushing, pulling, reaching of items weighing as much as 25 lbs. WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work Environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be borne by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

Job is performed in an office setting with exposure to computer screens and requires extensive use of a computer, keyboard, mouse and multi-line telephone system. The work described herein is primarily a modern office setting. Occasional travel may be required.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • No supervisory responsibilities.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFYING FACTORS

As a condition of employment, may be required to pass a pre-employment drug screening, as well as have acceptable reference and background check results to obtain access to military base. Must have reliable transportation to/from work a necessity and must be able to obtain access to military installations.

Shareholder Preference. BSNC gives hiring, promotion, training and retention preference to BSNC shareholders, BSNC shareholder descendants and BSNC shareholder spouses, in that order.
