Underwriting Trainee Program is your opportunity to build a solid foundation of

you will receive comprehensive training through in-person and virtual training

and work with a mentor to develop Surety underwriting expertise.


  • Achieve standards established for success in the programby completing daily assignments, including reading of text materials,completion of on-line courses and assignments, case study work, exams, andgeneral activities

  • Quickly learn and assimilate new processes, productknowledge, and sales skills

  • Meet personal sales goals on new and existing accounts inassigned territory

  • Develop leads through producer engagement includingphysical calls, phone canvassing, and written correspondence

  • Build relationships and work effectively with a team thatincludes producers, corporate resources, and field service

  • Learn and use proper field underwriting to assureprofitability: using established guidelines/procedures the incumbent willensure continuous development of assigned territory/Book of Business

After completion of training you will:

  • Build and leverage personal relationships with keycustomers that allow The Hartford to obtain new accounts as well as retain andexpand sales to existing accounts

  • Identify customers' needs and demonstrate how TheHartford's products and services can meet those needs

  • Achieve the operating plan objectives via new businessproduction through frequent interaction with assigned agents in order tosignificantly increase The Hartford's penetration of the agent's existing booksof business

  • Review bond submissions and determine appetite tounderwrite, underwrite and price new and renewal business, and present quotesto the agent.

  • Maintain knowledge of the regional office strategicdirection and plan, including goals and objectives to achieve profit and growth

  • Become the carrier of choice by communicating,publicizing, and providing training to agents and their staff on new productsand programs

  • Plan and prioritize work activities to achieve desiredresults within necessary time frames.

  • Effectively use on-line resources, automation tools, andcomputer software packages


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Economics, Finance,Accounting, Sales, Marketing preferred with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 orhigher (out of 4.0 scale or equivalent) at the time of graduation

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills: verbal,written, presentation

  • Bright, confident, assertive, know how to get results

  • Coach-able, team focused

  • Ability to obtain AFSB designation

  • Excellent written and verbal communication with strongsales and marketing skills

  • Strong sales skills and business acumen

  • High energy self-starter, good decision maker with anentrepreneurial spirit

  • Solid time management skills

  • Computer savvy- experience with MS office suite

  • Demonstrates leadership qualities

  • Achievement oriented
