Sandia National Laboratories RD Computer Science - Peridynamics (Senior Level / LTE) in Albuquerque, New Mexico
We are seeking a R&D Computer Scientist to join a dynamic, multi-disciplinary team of computational scientists and experimentalists working together to develop computational models to predict mechanical behavior of solid materials under shock loading. The model is based on the peridynamics method, a non-local model that has been shown to be an effective multiscale materials model particularly for high strains, high strain rates and fracture, and on traditional FE methods. Are you passionate about multiscale modelling and seeking the opportunity to develop code that simulates shock response at the continuum macroscale but is material microstructure aware with the ability to adapt to simulate material with highly varied microstructures ranging from single phase, homogeneous materials to complex composites? - PhD in physics, materials science, mechanical engineering, or relevant discipline and a bachelor’s degree in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM)
- Experience in scientific computing of mechanical behavior of solid materials
- Experience using, developing, and applying peridynamics and non-local methods
- Knowledge of computational modeling and simulation, especially of shock response of solid materials, finite elements methods or other materials mechanics models
- Experience in modeling microstructural effects on mechanical properties and understanding of materials mechanics and thermodynamics
- Ability to interact well with fellow technical workers of diverse technical backgrounds
- Experience with advanced codes for engineering simulation running on massively parallel computing clusters and GPU + CPU hybrid systems
- Experience with code verification and modern software quality practices
- Software development experience, including working with development teams using object-oriented frameworks
- Good communication skills as evidenced by a record of publication of results in peer-reviewed journals and external presentations at scientific conferences
The Computational Multiscale Department develops advanced materials simulation capabilities at scales ranging from electronic and atomistic scales to the continuum engineering scale that utilize high-performance computational methods to solve currently intractable problems of national importance. The department is involved in national security and nuclear energy modeling and simulation initiatives. The department also leads efforts to develop peridynamics and non-local gradient free methods for solid mechanics applications involving fracture, failure, and fragmentation.
