At Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, Dow Canada operates four world-scale production units that manufacture hydrocarbons, ethylene, polyethylene, and electricity. Serving our global customers, Dow Canada's operations in Fort Saskatchewan form one of the largest petrochemical facilities in Canada.
Dow currently has openings for Operations Technicians to work at our Fort Saskatchewan Energy facility, operating three gas fired cogeneration units.
The Process Operator is a vital resource for plant operations by applying technical skills to optimize plant operations, resolve plant problems, and enable safe and efficient production of quality products. They have direct and shared accountability for assets, and achievement of the plant, business and corporate goals.
The successful candidate will be expected to monitor, troubleshoot, and optimize plant operation.
As a member of an empowered operating team working 12 hour rotating shifts, the successful candidate will be self motivated and expected to perform duties in a safe, environmentally responsible manner.
Intervene with any unsafe activity and actively participate in company safety programs.
Complete detailed rounds every shift. Identify and escalate any issues that may affect the safe operation of the pressure equipment, i.e. damage, leaks, corrosion, coating failures, heat affected surfaces, abnormal noise, vibration, etc.
Complete detailed shift logbook notes.
Operate gas turbines for electrical generation and steam utility services.
Control and monitor the process through the Digital Control System.
Safely isolate (Lock out/Tag out), vent and drain, and prepare equipment for maintenance activities.
Electrical Switching operation
Issue Safe Work Permits for all Maintenance activities within the facility.
Train new employees on equipment, instrumentation and techniques, and provide coaching to peers.
Participate on the Site Emergency Response Team.
Be proficient in computers to perform job tasks.
A valid Class 5 driver’s license.
Able to work a 12 hour rotating shift schedule.
Able to effectively interact with multiple functions and diverse individuals to achieve goals.
Able to work in an empowered team environment.
Strong written and verbal communication skills. Able to communicate well, verbally and in writing, and have strong reading comprehension and listening skills.
Strong multi-tasking, problem solving and time management skills.
A self-starter who can identify, prioritize and accomplish multiple tasks.
Have a high regard for personal safety and the safety of others.
A minimum requirement for this Canada based position is the ability to work legally in the Canada. No visa sponsorship/support is available for this position.
Able to meet the following physical demands of the job, with or without
Lift, push, and pull up to 55 lbs.
Frequent bending, reaching, and lifting
Stand 50% of the time.
Walk for extended periods of time
Work at heights, climb stairs and ladders.
Work in tight and closed in spaces.
Wear all required personal protective equipment, including but not limited to respirator.
Work in an area of intense or continuous noise.
Work in an area with hazardous materials
Our safety equipment has weight restrictions. In order to qualify, you must be able to use standard safety equipment which is rated for someone who weighs 300 pounds or less.
Progress towards or completion of 2nd Class Certificate.
Previous experience in a related role.
Previous experience at a Dow facility.
Proficient in computer software applications, such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- High School Diploma or equivalent and must have an Alberta 3rd Class ABSA Power Engineers Certificate of Competency is required.
